What does engaged reading look like for newcomers? Join our presentation to learn more about how our ML teachers adapted texts and embedded routines in their lesson plans to increase ML student engagement. Participants will walk away with practical ways to increase ML student engagement as well as how to increase academic gains in English language acquisition and literacy.

We hope participants will gain a deeper understanding of Afghan culture, including its values, traditions, and family dynamics. Our presentation will also highlight the unique challenges Afghan students face in schools such as language barriers, trauma, and cultural adjustment

Come learn how I boosted multilingual learners' writing production and attitudes on writing in a six-session intervention! My goal was to raise 5th graders' confidence and skill before they took the WIDA ACCESS.

This session is designed for middle and high school teachers, district administrators, and school-based coordinators. Together, we’ll explore how to effectively support students in navigating Highline’s World Language Credit by Proficiency program and the pathway to the Seal of Biliteracy.

The presentation will offer a clear explanation of ACTFL proficiency levels and how they align with the Credit by Proficiency guidelines. We’ll focus on how to identify when students are ready to demonstrate their skills, and when it may be more beneficial to wait in order to build proficiency.

Do you want to learn ways to scaffold grade-level text for various levels of MLs and integrate language development with literacy instruction? We spent three months working closely with a PLC focusing on centering ML data, and we want share what we learned with you. In this interactive session, participants will engage in the planning process that resulted from centering ML data in a Secondary PLC: text analysis, formative assessment, and responsive instruction. While this session is mostly centered on the teacher planning moves that resulted from our action research, components of leadership moves and conditions for successful PLCs will also be included, making this an ideal session for secondary teachers who want to support their ML students with engaged reading, as well as teacher leaders, principals, and other building leaders who would like to strengthen and support PLCs.

Descubriremos por qué algunas palabras insisten en llevar tilde como corona de reina, mientras otras se conforman sin ella. Verás agudas con carácter, graves muy serias y esdrújulas que, como su nombre, suenan a hechizo mágico.
Acompáñanos en este recorrido donde las letras reclaman su acento con orgullo, y saldrás de aquí con más poder gramatical que un corrector ortográfico profesional.

As the Multilingual Learner Facilitator as Chinook Middle School, I wanted to address the language needs of our long-term MLs, or students who have been in our ML program for five years or more through intervention groups. This session will discuss how WIDA and SIPPS data, teacher collaboration, and a sense of belonging helped drive a group of long-term ML students to Meet Standard in their English/Language Arts class. Can this be replicated whole school, so all of our long-term MLs feel more confident and gain the skills and knowledge to meet standard? What will it take to get us there?

1. Reduce the stress of the prep work required 2. Shortcuts to repeating the strategies in each period. 3. The reasoning behind the use of the strategies: i.e Culturally Responsive....etc.

By the end of this 30-minute professional development workshop, educators will be able to use Immersive Reader to leverage reading digital texts in linguistically inclusive classroom environments. Participants will explore practical applications, gain hands-on experience with the tool, and collaborate on innovative approaches to support multilingual learners in leveraging their linguistic resources for academic success.
